The Lord's My Shepherd, Scottish Psalter, music by John Campbell [Jan. 11th, 2009|08:56 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | contemplative]

This song, worded from Ps 23, is an inspiring picture of what happens when the Lord is our Shepherd.

In the first verse of the song (Ps 23.1-2 ) God puts us in anframework of peace, away from the frantic pace and fear of this life:

"1 The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. 2 He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. "

In the 2nd 3rd, and 4th verses of the song (Ps 23.3-5) we see us yeilding to God as He is restoring, ridding us of our imperfections, healing us:

"3 He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. 4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. 5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. "

In the 5th verse (Ps 23.6) We find the promise and hope that as His sheep, we will live with God, not against Him, in His house of true blessing and happiness:

"6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. "

What a shepherd, to take us from our helpless, insecure, false pretenses, and shattered existence, and remakes us into His children!

He took my burdens all away [Dec. 16th, 2008|07:57 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

He gave me a song (by Howard)

He took my burdens all away,… He gave me a song. God wants to take your worldly burden – it is not something you can handle without His guidance, His power, and His continual care. He gave His only Son so that you will trust Him to use the resources at His command to take care of your life’s burdens. You must understand you haven’t been able to manage those burdens yourself. If you don’t understand this you will not let Him take them. How does He do it? He remakes you into a new child with His spirit from above (not just with a spirit from this world below. He gives you a new start, His higher ways, His pure spirit, His power. If you hold on to your old self, you prevent Him from what He wants to do, continually making you new, making you pure, making you holy, making you loving, making you secure and confident, making you wise in heavenly ways – these come from Him and give you the power over the burdens of this earthly life – and instead you find yourself continuing to deal with all the burdens you will never have the power to deal with on your own. Life’s burdens build into feelings of failure and guilt. “Why can’t I do the things I know I should?” “Why can’t I make the choices I know I should?” “Why can’t I control my own destiny?” “Am I not good enough?” “Am I born to be messed up?” “Why don’t I love others the way I should?” Do you find yourself trying to stay ahead of your guilt, trying and trying again to keep it all under control, eventually ignoring your guilt and shame, and not even admitting it to yourself? You are hiding the truth from yourself, so it is hard to admit your powerlessness so you can let God take over! You must give God your burdens. He can and will handle them as no one else can!

His Grace Reaches Me [Dec. 7th, 2008|08:20 pm]

The Hymn "His Grace Reaches Me" has several powerful messages in it. Near the end of the chorus we find the phrase “… and I’m happy in my soul,”. This phrase often is taken lightly. Even when our lives are full of anger, sorrow, hurt, and pain, we can still have joy. This is happiness in my soul, not a feeling or emotion of this world. Just because we are having a good time, we do not necessarily have the joy that transcends all understanding… Philippians chapter 4 verse 7. Am I happy in my soul? That is what the grace of God offers. Please surrender to the Jesus to accept this fathomless joy.

Nailed to the Cross (by Beck and Tullar) [Dec. 7th, 2008|08:16 pm]

“…But He carried my sins with Him there.” While I agree with these precious words, I make it so impersonal and impotent unless I feel the truth that He carried me, my sinful self with Him there. Don’t forget:

  • “All have sinned and fallen short…” Romans chapter 3 verse 23,
  • “… the wages of sin is death.” Romans chapter 6 verse 23,
  • Paul in Romans chapter 7 shares the impossibility of living without sin constantly in our lives.
  • “If we claim we have no sin we are only fooling ourselves and not living in truth.” 1 John chapter 1 verse 8.
It is not just my sins that He carried to the cross, He carried my sinful self with Him to the cross. Or have you for gotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined Him in His death? Romans chapter 6 verse 3.

Messages from Hymns and Spritual Songs - Sanctuary [Dec. 7th, 2008|08:04 pm]

Sanctuary (by Thompson and Scruggs)

I realized recently that if you don’t feel the need for sanctuary in the Lord already, you probably are not in reality… you are probably finding sanctuary in something else, because we are all participating in the human condition and very limited on our own. If you are finding your sanctuary in something besides the Lord, you are finding it in something that is a mist or vapor, something that lasts only momentarily if at all.

One way you can look at this need for sanctuary is the line in the song Sanctuary: “prepare me to be a sanctuary pure and true”… If there is any impurity or hidden deceit in you, you are only kidding yourself if you think you can handle these issues AT ALL. That is true for me. Only the One who is pure and holy can truly help you.

Memorial Day at Worship - Ps 134 [May. 29th, 2007|08:07 pm]
[mood | thoughtful]

Memorial Day at Worship - Ps 134: Behold, bless the LORD, all servants of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD. May the LORD, who made the heavens and earth, bless you out of Zion!
O LORD Most High,
Help us to realize that we not only bless you when we gather together but because you dwell within us, we can and should lift up our hands to you throughout our daily lives, at work, at play, with our family, and in our community. We must praise you in whatever situation we find ourselves. We must give thanks to you for the beauty in our world for you are the source of all good and perfect gifts. Especially in this country we should give thanks for the freedom at live relatively un-oppressed. It was not mere men who began this country, but you our LORD who place governments in power and tear them down. But let us remember those men who sought freedom to worship you as they best understood your will. Let us be thankful you sent them before us. Let us live our lives in our current situations living out your will for us in Your Holy Word with Your Holy Spirit in us, and following in the steps of Jesus, Your Son and our LORD and God. Let us know we can only do good through Your Power, be Holy through Your Cleansing. May we live lives worthy of Christ Who gave His life for us.

Tradition, Conscience, and God's Law [Mar. 16th, 2006|10:26 pm]
Traditions are set with time and wisdom (hopefully). Traditions are all over the world, some have become law, some are just expected. Traditions can be right or wrong, or somewhere in between.

Conscience is set by our understanding of what is right and wrong. Conscience is to be followed as much as possible. Conscience can be right or wrong, or some of both. Conscience can be corrected when wrong if allowed to be taught by understanding of God's truths. Conscience can be made from tradition and truth, and even from superstition. But it is your conscience. Make it from the best, not the worst.

God's law is the best. It is unique. It is not made by man. It is always right. The problem with God's law is mankind. Mankind does not always understand God's law. Sometimes it is confused with traditions and conscience at best, or deliberately twisted or directly denied its Due.

Over 2000 years ago, Jesus came to live with mankind. He had seen since the creation of mankind that people get a little mixed up about what is right and what is wrong. So, He told us about our confusion of traditions, our getting mixed up about what is right and what is wrong. He told us he knew we sometimes get so wrapped up in ourselves we forget about His Father, the One True God, and how good God is, and how much God loves us. He taught us to listen to what God says and obey Him. Then Jesus died as though He was a condemned criminal on the Roman cross, then rose from the dead to prove to everyone that He was not lying about everything He taught. He left his own Spirit with us to help us live for God in confidence and to help us teach the rest of the world that they can also live for God.

Jesus will be coming back someday. Maybe today. Maybe a long time from now. But He will be coming back. Make sure you listen to Him. Read and study about mankind and the relationship God offers. About eternity in heaven with God. Learn to love God and mankind. Let God's law of love, truth, and righteousness have priority over tradition. Let God's law rule in your conscience. God will bless you for that. Have faith that He will.

Learning From History - Sectarian Exclusivism versus Christian Unity [Feb. 12th, 2006|09:51 pm]
Coming of age in the very early 1800's, Alexander Campbell's basic mission was to eliminate the sectarianism so blatant in believers of his day. This sectarianism may be thought of as exclusive fellowship, so exclusive that wars were fought, many people were killed, many were left destitute in the name of Jesus Christ, and this horrible and disgraceful sectarianism that he saw and heard of drove him to his mission. Just as there is one Lord (Jesus, Son of God), one Faith (entrusting one's life in Jesus), one Church (the family of all who the Lord chooses to save), and one Baptism (into Jesus, Lord and Savior). [The parentheses are all my expansions, but fairly basic to teachings of the holy scriptures.]

Ever since the Bible began to be translated in the popular languages in Europe, the idea of using the Bible to guide the believer in God's will became more and more popular. Campbell realized that there were many opinions about subjects addressed in God's Word. Many of the differences of opinion were based on a lack of disciplined and scholarly study of the Bible. But also many of the differences of opinion were based on extrapolations (my words) of what the Bible stated, inferred, or implied, or on human attempts to reconcile seeming conflicts or contradictions drawn from study of the Bible.

While Alexander Campbell applied his life to teach a Christianity based on God's Word, he also realized he must accept in fellowship all those who believed in Jesus as Lord, God's Son, and Savior, whether or not they agreed with him in matters that were not clearly presented in the scriptures. He looked for and encouraged the fruits of God's spirit in those who proclaimed Jesus as Lord. One rule of thumb Campbell used was essentially: where the Bible is silent, we must be silent (not make rules). This was Campbell's reaction to the problem of exclusive fellowship (sometimes to the ultimate extreme).

There are some successful ecuminical movements whose start (or restart) was in the 20th century, where authority of God's Word is taught, and the basic principles from God's are espoused. The churches of Jesus Christ need to learn as Campbell did, to recognize that in this world of human flesh, there are and always will be differences of opinion between Christians, and to choose to honor all in their love for Jesus as Lord, and reach out to the world with love for one another, magnifying the glory of God as his true servants.

First Blog Entry [Jan. 28th, 2006|11:01 pm]
New ground for this blogger. Let me know if you are interested in figuring out the issues with church restoration. I am on my way there myself. It is so easy for us to "make" the church in our own image. The first clue is it is Jesus' church and he has already made (built) it. The second clue is He didn't want it divided.
